Spain won the Women’s World Cup for the first time last month yet, just two weeks on, no one is talking about the success. In that intoxicating, finite pocket of time, Spain’s players had the freedom to lose themselves in the victory of their lives. The decades-long battle for equality in women’s soccer, and society, has a way to go but nothing changes in silence. But beyond the headlines, this is a story which symbolizes the problems within women’s soccer and society, of women not being respected or listened to. England women’s head coach Sarina Wiegman dedicated her UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year award to the Spanish national team.

Until Sunday night, England met every tough situation it fell into during the Women’s World Cup the same way: It found a way out. So it was understandable when, in the 70th minute of the World Cup final against Spain on Sunday in Sydney, Australia, England Coach Sarina Wiegman thought her team had found an escape hatch yet again. Surely, Wiegman thought, it would find a new way out. “I thought, ‘Now we are going to score a goal,’” Wiegman said. “‘Now we are going to score a goal and get to 1-1.’ But we didn’t.”

Turning cubs into LionessesIn the last major tournament before Wiegman took over, England crashed out in heartbreaking circumstances. England crashed out of the 2019 Women's World Cup in the semifinals. While the England players’ abilities speak for themselves, Wiegman has helped to instill a formidable team mindset in the group through some “non-negotiable” philosophies. “I think in a team you always have to do your best,” she told CNN before the start of the Women’s World Cup. Before the World Cup, England had won 26 of the 32 games under Wiegman and had only lost once – a friendly against Australia in April.

We need funding in our development. We need funding in our grassroots. We need funding. CNN has reached out to Football Australia who declined to comment but offered an interview opportunity at a future date. Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch manager of England’s Lionesses, was also asked how Australia could take advantage of the team’s successful World Cup run.

It means James can’t be selected for Saturday’s quarterfinal against Colombia in Sydney and will also be out of commission if the Lionesses advance to the semis. “Lauren is really sorry for her actions which led to the red card and is full of remorse. James initially received a yellow card for what appeared to be a petulant and deliberate decision to step on Alozie. After a review from the video assistant referee (VAR), the punishment was upgraded to a red card, leaving England to finish the match down a player. England's Lauren James has been banned for two games after she was sent off for a stamp on Nigeria's Michelle Alozie.

“With this England team,” Wiegman said, “everyone expects us to win.”But the England that enters this World Cup is, arguably, a weakened champion. Midfielder Fran Kirby will miss the World Cup, too, after having surgery on her knee. Leah Williamson, who captained England as it conquered, has, like Mead, torn a knee ligament. A goalless draw in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Canada, England’s last game before the World Cup, was the team’s third straight scoreless performance. That fluidity, Wiegman said, has its own motivating value, offering “opportunities for other players to play, to take responsibility, and to show who they are.”

CNN —After triumphing at the Women’s Euros in 2022, England will go into this year’s Women’s World Cup as one of the favorites to win the tournament. Since Sarina Wiegman took charge of the Lionesses in September 2021, the squad has transformed into something of a juggernaut. Naomi Baker/Getty ImagesEngland starts its World Cup campaign against Haiti on July 22, before facing Denmark and China in its other group stage matches. The USWNT has won the last two World Cup titles and knocked England out of the semifinals in 2019. If England is to win the Women’s World Cup for the first time, she will have to find a way to do so without captain Leah Williamson and goalscorer Beth Mead, who are both out with ACL knee injuries.
